Mahala Rai Banda [Romania],
Romanian gypsy supergroup Mahala Rai Banda have come along way from performing the Bucharest wedding circuit. The 11-piece musical army is a combination of the best talent from Romania’s two musical meccas: Clejani, home of violonists, cymbalists, double bass players and other accordion players, and Zece Prajini, where live “the greatest density of wind players per square meter”. The Eastern European prodigies put on quite a performance for their Womad preview show, and Heckler can only hope they have energy for their Sunday and Monday slots.
The group combine the racous energy of a gypsy campfire party with funk, soul and Middle-eastern influences. Music best enjoyed on your feet with dancing shoes strapped on tight.
