The Origin Of Species By Means Of Natural Selection Or The Survival Of Revolutionary Theories In The Face Of Scientific and Ecclesiastical Objections: Being a Musical Comedy About Charles Darwin (1809-1882).
While you might think that a show about the life and work of Charles Darwin (and with a title that long) sounds like something you’d be forced to watch in high school, this original musical comedy by John Hinton is quite a treat.
In fact, if science was taught this way at school, maybe I’d be working for NASA today.
Hinton has a great knack for musical comedy, but what he’s even more skilled at is getting the audience to really like him. At the show we attended, every single audience member looked like they were having a blast. Some were even keen to dance along to his melodies.
His songs ranged from a number about genetics to a ditty about being “I-dyllic” at sea. He’s got great stage presence and carries a one-act show quite well.
While the show is abundant in puns (generally good ones) it’s also very informative.
My favourite bits were his impersonations of the various characters and the frequent tangents that those impersonations would lead to.
Heckler recommends going with a group of friends, especially if you know any creationists!
Pro-tip: Sit right at the front and get involved!
