COMEDIAN Craig Hill is gay.
No guys, really. Really gay.
How many times in a gig do you think you’d need to be reminded that the man in the hot pink kilt parading in front of you is gay? Hill himself seemed to think that constantly reminding his audience of it was the best possible use of his time on stage. Perhaps this is coming across like I have an issue with Hill’s sexuality – believe me, I don’t. I simply have no desire to hear about anyone’s sex life for an hour. I especially don’t need the lewd language hand gestures. While the first few minutes of this might have been mildly amusing, the novelty wore off pretty rapidly.
And while embarrassing your audience is all part and parcel of a comedy routine, Hill takes it a step too far, leaving his victims not bemused and embarrassed, but actually insulted.
While Hill himself didn’t lack charisma or confidence (he has a little too much in fact – no comedian should find himself that amusing), his show unfortunately never seems to develop past an introduction. This seems a pity because the few moments of anecdotal material and impressions – sandwiched between the crudity and the cruelty – were easily the most entertaining parts of his act and in fact had real potential.
So if constant cringe-worthy sex jokes are your thing, Hill is perfect for you. But avoid the front row and the well-lit sections of the tent, lest you become the constant butt of jokes. Oops, better hope Hill doesn’t see that last sentence – he’ll spend at least ten minutes making “that’s what he said!” jokes out of that alone.
