Smart Casual – Broken Dreams

SMART Casual are one of the more musically talented comedy duos on the local scene. Fletcher Jones plays the guitar beautifully and the pair harmonise skilfully. Having said this, they still don’t sound like a band. They use only a single guitar and their voices, and they have no qualms about stopping in the middle of a song to explain a punch line or answer a heckle.

Their show coasts through television-style media, including interviews with the band and mock advertisements. There is also a lecture on art history using multimedia.

Smart Casual’s comedy doesn’t really rely on punch lines, but on gradually pressing deeper and deeper into uncomfortable, awkward or nauseating situations. Broken Dreams is theatrical and scripted, with some sneaky reliance on improvisation. They pull both of these off flawlessly, across several comedic mediums.
