About the Weather is a one man play about a mundane lifestyle. The main character (Sam Simmons) is known simply as ‘The Man’. Not a lot happens in the play, it revolves around ‘The Man’ going to work, riding the bus and unsuccessfully trying to assemble an Ikea coffee table.
For those familiar with Sam Simmons’ work, this might seem like an odd vehicle for his bizarre, fast paced brand of comedy. Sam Simmons presents ‘The Man’s’ dull life with an extravagant set, rock-concert style lighting and a hip-hop soundtrack. He attacks the role and the audience with amazing energy. Dancing, yelling, getting into the crowd and arguing with the narrator (voiced by Triple J’s Craig Schuftan). The result is a very colourful interpretation of a dull and familiar tale.
This show has a bursting live energy and Simmons makes a genuine and successful effort to connect with his audience. It’s very weird but it’s a lot more than ‘just weird’.
