Peaches ‘n’ Gin Burlesque’s At The Movies returns to the Fringe for the second year in a row. It is a collection of burlesque performances, tied loosely together by a pair of overly cheesy hosts – it is also a loose parody of David and Margaret’s At The Movies and follows the format of a review show.
While some segments of the show were undeniably more enjoyable than others, the only consistency was in the hosts, who overall, were somewhat grating. The constant stream of bad jokes and forced pop-culture references sandwiched between segments became a little hard to take, though this was more than made up for in their musical numbers, which were both hilarious and vocally impressive.
Burlesque dancers Luna Eclipse and Sapphire Snow are delightfully sexy and refreshingly funny, though the show’s first few segments are slightly dull and a little awkward (including a particularly cringe-worthy Harry Potter parody). However, the final few scenes will make you forget your doubts – especially the Mary Poppins number, that will forever give you worrying associations with the childhood classic.
So while At the Movies perhaps falls a little flat, it is still worth seeing – the barely existent costumes donned by wonderfully talented burlesque dancers is alone worth the ticket price.
