As we go through life, music plays an important role in providing reference points to our experiences and emotions. English comedian Dan Willis, with the aid of an MP3 player and a projector, uses the songs that have been important in his life as the basis of his narrative in Radiohead Redux.
Within the intimate setting of a new upstairs room at The Tuxedo Cat, Willis interacts positively with the audience, using the lure of melted Freddo Frogs as incentive to get involved.
The danger of basing a comedy show around pop culture, and Willis appeared well aware of this, is that English references may not translate to Australian audiences.
Whilst Willis has begun to adapt his material to cater to our audiences, including a painful reminder of our 90s penchant for the shirtless pop icon, Peter Andre, it will take him time to weave these seamlessly into his show.
As with all comedy at the Fringe, the routines will get tighter and more fluent as the weeks roll on. The music geek and the English expat would find the most value here.
