Every wondered about what it is to be a male, a metro sexual male, in a women’s world? Well that’s what Dave Thornton questioned and explored with his audience, on one hot Adelaide night.
This reviewer made the fatal mistake of sitting in the front row and found herself a part of the conversation Dave Thornton had with his audience. The tears from laughter, that Thornton instigated ( and was proud of!) were easily dried by the industrial fan the venue provided to dry the sweat on the audience and the performer!
Thornton’s energy and ability to tell a story made him a likeable rogue, with his comedy crossing a few proverbial boundaries. (Isn’t that what good comedy does? Asks the questions you wouldn’t in polite company?) His comedic styling included the ability to take the mickey out of himself, the male’s two brains and the irony that brings, and of course, the mystifying female counterpart. Thornton’s comedy is infectious and his social commentary, through the lens of a male, makes no apologies for the ridiculousness found in the Adelaide airport car park or in a Melbourne share house. He made no apologies for not understanding the female psyche or their infatuation with firemen, but instead gave the audience a witty and insightful look into what it is to be a male.
Thornton’s talent lies in his ability to have a conversation with his audience, he enables the audience to empathise with his gaffes and inadequacies while his cheeky nature ensures we laugh out loud, with him. Thornton is a gifted story-teller, with asides and audience participation that leave you giggling. If only to feel like you’ve met that funny new friend, then you need to see Thornton live!
