Review – Kate Middleton Show Queen
In our modern world of tabloid magazines, reality TV shows and inspirational memes, it is easy to fall for the notion that we all have the chance to be movie stars or royalty. Kate Middleton Show Queen, starring Katie Reddin-Clancy, explores what happens when you follow this dream, and fall short.
In this one woman play, the main character is a Kate Middleton impersonator named Katie. Whilst her look-a-like has bagged the second in line for the throne, Katie is desperately seeking a date for the wedding of her school friend, who is now a successful lawyer. Katie’s current situation, when contrasted with her friend, causes her to question the life choices she has made.
Katie is provided with advice on her plight by an array of characters. As a one woman show, this involves speedy costume changes and formidable acting ability. A few characters provide the bulk of the laughs, particularly a young working class woman with a passion for New Age meditation.
The major flaw of the show is that sometimes the transitions between characters are a little difficult to follow. Given that this was only the second performance of the show, it is understandable that some areas of tightening up. Reddin-Clancy’s prodigious acting talents, however, make the show worth seeing.
