Review – The Art of Letting Go

This refreshingly funny show was presented in a very simple style – a woman, a piano and a lot of attitude. Not the sort of attitude that gets an airing very often. Rachel Collis, married too young and somewhat disenchanted by the early warning signs of middle-age, this chanteuse sings a little too loudly at times, probably hoping ‘the answer’ will hear somewhere away in the distance and come to rescue her when it does. Collis reminds me of a grown up Sue Heck (Eden Sher) the ungainly daughter in tv’s ‘The Middle’, kind of dorkish and absurdly optimistic. That’s the joke really, Collis sings of love and happiness, unrequited love and unhappiness every so often proudly stopping to reveal a little of her inner thinking.
There’s only one more performance of this show, so if you enjoy beautiful piano and the sort of voice that would stop a show, get your tickets now. The encore is surprisingly left of field – a most unexpected song about how cool things would be if the Germans had won the war. The venue’s staff were astonishingly rude, so I’ll be avoiding The Promethean in future.
