Choir Girl is intriguing. It begins with Susan sitting and singing her choir audition song. As the show proceeds we hear singing and suddenly we became aware that what we took for recorded underscoring was actually a choir. From that point the women are a part of the action, humming, clicking, singing bits and pieces of the songs that the new choir are learning. It’s an interesting idea, like a classical greek chorus. Here’s a tip, when you’re in a choir don’t ever, ever, ever form a crush on the choirs male accompanist… as Susan does, with very unfortunate results. There is a lot of humour, a touch of creepiness, and the central actress did extremely fine work in difficult circumstances. The show deserves better than the difficult circumstances of its opening night.
As a venue Tuxedo Cat scored a big FAIL on the night we were there. Signage was pretty non-existent, only one of the venue staff was at all friendly or helpful, non-alcoholic beverages consisted of one brand of lemonade and another of a cola (no diet options), it was incredibly hot and the room we were in did not have a single, solitary fan. End result: an audience member fainted and the incident was not handled at all well. It looked as if it was left to the lead actress to stop the show and ask for lights up so that the woman could be assisted.
