Womad – The Bird
Billed as “organic electronica”, The Bird used drums and keyboard to create everything from dubstep to commodore 64 soundscapes. Simon Durrington was excellent on the keyboard, but it was drummer Ben Walsh who really made the show one of the highlights of Womadelaide. Despite a broken foot forcing him to use his non-preferred leg on the drums, he blew Botanic Park away with a relentlessly ferocious percussive attack. Between songs, Ben unleashed pronouncements brimming with the charisma and conviction of a cult leader – the crowd would have jumped off a cliff for him by the end if he’d thought to ask.
