After a 45 minute wait for the show to start, which may have been the fault of an earlier show running late, Dune had heavy lifting to do to lift the mood of the audience. But they pulled it off effortlessly, with a brooding opening number that never seemed to end — and I didn’t want it to. Lead singer Jade MacRae’s vocals are utterly enchanting, and her haunting lyrics perfectly suit the sparse soundscape provided by her keys, Luke Hodgson’s bass, and Leigh Fisher’s work on drums and vintage synths. I caught my breath each time Jade delivered the song’s chorus.
“History’s repeating, And the walls fall down/
My hear stops beating, The circus comes to town.”
Apart from a “Don’t Change” cover, which the band made entirely their own, the entire set was original compositions. Dune can drive you dance, or move you to introspection, with their brand of savvy, vintage electronica. An absolute recommend for any fans of Ladyhawke, the Chromatics or Purity Ring.
