This show felt like a warm hug, in the comfort of Uncle Brian’s lounge room. It’s not your typical comedy show.
The premise of Pictures Of You, is that Australian comedy/poetry/warm up legend, Brian Nankervis, interviews two comedians, and gets them to talk about photos that they’ve brought in from their past. The night I saw the show, Genevieve Morris and Andy Lee were the guests.
Now, I’ve never been a fan of Genevieve Morris, but this wasn’t her usual schtick. It was toned down. Honest. She took us on a journey through her childhood; from being a tomboy, to finally receiving her parent’s approbation. I had to hold back a tear. It was a touching moment.
Next up was that lovable larrikin, Andy Lee. He shared stories about the hijinks he and his brother got up to, and the neglected ways of his poor younger sister. We heard about him growing up in Camberwell, next to a grumpy ball stealing neighbour, who in the end, turned out to be one of the Great Escapees!
The show is full of surprises, and Brian Nankervis does a wonderful job of navigating the tales. It’s less of someone getting up and telling jokes, and more of a conversation amongst friends.
I recommend seeing Pictures Of You. It’s a nice change from the standard show format, and it may give you an insight into a comedian that you did not know existed.
