Review – Bev Killick: Goes “There”… Again

I’ll admit up-front a certain amount of difficulty in writing this review because, while I could see the humour value of her material and the audience around me was loving it, very little of Bev Killick’s material connected with me and made me laugh. It’s a nice reminder that not everyone will find all things funny and everyone is different.
Killick’s work is brash, crass, and brutally direct in a friendly way, but there seemed an element of ‘us and them’ classist humour going on that I don’t find amusing, just as I know that not everyone appreciates shows about starving artists or things like that. It’s about shared experiences and common ground and Bev’s humour is largely based on a cultural experience I’ve never had.
And I know this sounds like a negative review, but I assure you it isn’t, because she has some really nice social messages to put across within her work. She is anti slut shaming and is loud and proud about her own sexual past, and she is very strongly supportive of removing the stigma surrounding mental illness, and some of her material (which I did connect with) concerns her son, who suffers from schizophrenia.
Bev is performing every Monday until the 15th of April.
