On the giant Arts Centre Stage Sammy J appears in his dapper suit, all sharp edges and angles, looking very small. But his performance fills the stage.
Sammy J’s Potentially is a potent cocktail of tales of the improbable, explorations of mortality, Australiana, and musings on the chaotic nature of life. Sammy’s clipped and articulate delivery provides contrast to the absurd nature of his material. His self-deprecating style and respectful treatment of the audience invites a degree of trust.
Being an audience member in Sammy J’s show feels like chasing a white rabbit down a mine shaft. The dramatic and unpredictable swerves in the narrative carry something of the uncertainty principle in them; you might understand where you are, but not how you got here, nor where you are going. Then suddenly, without warning, every part of the puzzle falls into place, and the audience erupts with surprised delight and gratitude as a single and complete story rises from the rubble. It’s a deeply pleasurable experience.
Sammy J’s highly energetic comedy is for those who like to reflect while they laugh. A highly competent musician and a far less competent dancer, his many talents as an exquisite story-teller, singer, and writer are on display in Potentially. A highly original and magnificently scripted hour of comedy awaits you – definitely.
