Review – The Worst Week of my Life
The Worst Week of my Life (La peggior settimana della mia vita) is a middle-of-the-road romantic comedy based on a pedestrian BBC sitcom of the same name. We follow likeable Paulo (Fabio De Luigi) in the week leading up to his wedding to the beautiful Margherita (Cristiana Capotondi). While never truly swaying from its direction, that of an ending with a wedding, the movie mostly concerns itself with assailing the affable Paulo with clichéd mishaps that threaten his nuptials: he gets a cool reception from Margherita’s parents, is stalked by a spurned ex, and then the beloved family dog eats the wedding rings!
It’s all heavily reminiscent of Meet the Parents: at its best we get a few laughs; at its worst we’re already asleep. This is staple romantic comedy, and translating an already popular English television show into an Italian movie works alright when pursuing obvious laughs for mainstream local audiences, but this is hardly challenging viewing. TV director Alessandro’s cinematic debut really doesn’t lift the game beyond farcical small-screen material. For an overseas audience chasing the subtitled gems of world cinema, this might be a miss.
