Have you ever wondered what it would sound like if you combined Pulp, Dizzee Rascal, and Frank Sinatra? Neither have I. But having seen The Correspondents play at the Space Theatre on Saturday night, I feel like I know the answer. And I like it.
Since forming in London in 2007, The Correspondents have been bringing their alternative dance electro swing mash-up to stages worldwide. Credited with “almost changing the weather” at WOMAD last year, they have returned to Adelaide to finish off their Australian tour. And judging by the cheers from the crowd when WOMAD was mentioned, plenty of those fans who caught them the first time round have come back for more. But whether you knew what to expect, or were about to discover what you’re in for, it wasn’t at all long before you were completely hooked.
To try and describe charismatic front man Mr. Bruce in any depth would require a review of its own, but between his geometric matador-influenced outfit, dominating yet astoundingly precise dance moves, and unrelenting voice, it was impossible not to want to watch his every move. The only challenge to this draw was DJ Chucks pumping out some of the tastiest drum and bass and electro swing I’ve ever heard. The Correspondents didn’t invite you to dance, they challenged you not to.
There is absolutely no denying that The Correspondents have their truly unique performance refined to an art form. Whether you planned to dance until your feet hurt or sit back and enjoy a few quiet drinks, the show was visually captivating, aurally delectable and had an atmosphere of genuine fun. Now please excuse me while I go practice my swing moves for the next time they come to Adelaide.
