Review – We’re Kind Of A Big Deal
You should all make a resolution this Adelaide Fringe. Try something novel, a little bit different. GO TO A COMEDY SHOW THAT IS LESS THAN $15 THAT FEATURES COMEDIANS THAT ARE NOT THE ONES YOU HAVE ALREADY SEEN ON TV OR HEARD ON RADIO.
Where can you find such a mystical thing? Well unlike unicorns, these things exist and are closer than you think. Nick O’Connell and Joe Sampson present “We’re Kind of a Big Deal” – a medley of a self-confessed, self-deprecating comic and a country kid coming to the big smoke who is, well, just a funny guy.
O’Connell starts the show with tales of life out of home and being compared to Justin Bieber. For some reason he reminds me of a young Simon Amstell, just a lot less tragic, dark and depressed. His tales of woe fall into the field of comical geeky misfortune. Shy with girls, rejected from “joe-jobs” and militantly defending his double-degree choices, his delivery is in the vein of contemporaries like local-boy James McCann.
So what are you waiting for? Get on your unicorn and get along to a proper Fringe show! After all, don’t you want to be that person who gets to say, “I saw them when they were only $10, playing a small venue that was falling apart?”
