Review – 5:30 Show
The 5:30 Show consisted of four young comedians from the ACT doing stand-up – Tim Noonan, Simon Bower and Harris Stuckey, with Shahed Sharify working as MC for the group. While the boys showed promise, they weren’t performing to what would have been their target audience – Gen X and Y – as the crowd consisted of mostly older people. There were funny moments but the jokes fell short the majority of the time and the biggest laugh that was received was prompted by an obviously bored audience member.
Sharify, Bower and Noonan all noticeably checked their notes, interrupting the flow of the show and demonstrating their lack of preparation. Their one-liners lacked cohesion and were each as disjointed as the next, confusing the audience and losing laughs. Stuckey was the exception, whose segment was the most connected, but his laughs fell shortest as he delivered a segment on PEZ lollies that garnered almost no response from the audience.
The show was unpolished and inconsistent. While it did draw some laughs, they were few and far between. This might have been due to lacking their target audience, but the quality of this show might have also had something to do with it. To reference a line from Stuckey, “It was unpalatable.”
