10 Quick Qs – The Sexy Detectives
1. Describe your show Twitter-style, 140 characters or less!
It’s smart sketch comedy about dumb people. We only have the range to play 10 or so characters each, so 140 is out of the question.
2. Do you feel pressured to be funny at family gatherings?
Only if they’ve gathered to come and see one of our shows, and generally that’d only be Mike’s folks anyway. Dave actually has family he never sees in Adelaide, so maybe they’ll gather at one of our shows. Otherwise, it’s like the chef who doesn’t spend hours in the kitchen when they’re not at work: we’re off duty. Luke’s family wouldn’t let him get an word in edgeways anyway.
3. Is this your first Adelaide Fringe? If so, what are you most looking forward to? If not, what is your least favourite thing about the festival?
It’s our first time at the Fringe so we’re very excited about the whole experience! Getting to connect with brand new audience members, and perhaps some of Dave’s extended family, is at the top of the list.
4. What was the most challenging aspect about preparing your show?
The tricky thing that a comedy group faces that perhaps an individual stand up or performer doesn’t is getting everyone into the same room at the same time for rehearsals. That’s compounded further when you have the underlying tensions that our group has. If Mike would just apologise to Luke and Dave, it would all be fine.
5. If you could be any character in any movie, who and what would it be?
Ask that question of pretty much any guy ever and 100% of the time the response is Batman. That’s our answer too, but we’d clarify that it’d be the Adam West version.
6. Who’s your biggest comedic idol?
Mike’s comedy idol is Shaun Micallef. Dave’s is Rowan Atkinson, pre-1990. Luke doesn’t care for comedy.
7. Is heckling allowed?
Luke’s been known to heckle Dave while he is performing his character monologue. As for the audience… please don’t heckle us. We cannot hack it and it will totally destroy us.
8. What’s your favourite Internet-related guilty indulgence?
We don’t feel guilty about anything we do while on the internet. Why, do you? This sounds more like a you thing than an us thing.
9. What is the biggest accolade you’ve received from one of your shows?
We’ve won a number of Australian and overseas film comps, plus we’ve been nominated for some other awards too, which is lovely. Also, in one of our sketches Luke gives Mike a pretty prestigious trophy for Best Pet at a made-up Pet and Animal Expo.
10. What other Fringe show are you most excited to catch up with?
We have been keen to watch Four Screws Loose make sketch comedy happen, so they’re on the list. We’re also pumped about the Radio Variety Hour people, who will be making 1950s radio plays happen. But mostly we’re jazzed for the show we haven’t heard of that will blow us away and leave us asking, “Why the hell haven’t we heard of this?” Pretty much we’re hoping that there are a whole bunch of those.
The Sexy Detectives are the masters of comedic monologues. It takes a lot of skill to have one man bring the audience to stitches. My friends and I always keep an eye out for them, and we hope they bring this Fringe show to Brisbane soon.
