Review – Freewheelin’: A Bob Dylan Tribute
Musical tribute performances need not be solely for the deceased; case in point, the Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan show which left a packed out Spiegeltent audience with mouths agape at the inspiring talent to grace the stage.
A showcase of artists, including Beccy Cole, Libby Thorne and the infamous Limbo band were amongst others on hand to perform their own interpretation of a Dylan classic. A comic rendition by Jimmy and Randy of “Just Like A Woman” had the crowd in hysterics, while the version of “Make You Feel My Love” easily produced some tears. Harmonicas, loop pedals, school-sirens, and distorted vocals were just the beginning of an epic array of instruments used to replicate the individual tones this folk legend created.
With a back-catalogue of songs that stretches up into the several hundreds, the toughest part of this show was going to be selecting exactly which songs to squeeze in. The classics, the strange, the funny, and even a Christmas track were included to occupy the hour timeframe, leaving the audience satisfied that every spectrum of Bob Dylan’s repertoire was touched upon.
After each artist concluded I was sure I had found my favourite, only to once again be left astounded, as the next performance gave me an equal amount of goose bumps. A truly awe-inspiring show which has left me with feelings that no other Fringe show has produced, the only negative being it was a one-off gig with no repeat dates lined up at this time –what’s up with that?
