Review – #hashtag
The improv artists shout out to the crowd, “Who has a good suggestion?”
My inside voice says, “I do,” but my exterior gives nothing away. The request will always be met with the roll of tumbleweeds and the chirp of crickets. So the potential comedy gold stays locked in my mind – until now.
#hastag provides the shy and introverted, but social-media extrovert, the ability to control a merry band of comediennes by commanding them to do your will with the tap of a key.
These five girls monitor the audience suggestions via a projected Twitter feed and act out the hashtags with an enthusiasm that I would usually reserve for the first piece of cake after a failed detox diet. Suggestions included #celebritiesreadmeantweets, #disneyprincesses and the surprisingly funny #hipstersatthebeach. This last hashtag prompted one of the most original improv lines that I’ve ever heard: “I ordered a lactose-inclusive coffee today, I hope we can still be friends”.
So if you’re looking for improv with a twist of Twitter this fringe, you’re out of luck, the show has finished its run. Keep an eye on #firstdraftmelb for their next round of shows.
