Review – Sparrow-Folk: Nested Confessions
Sparrow-Folk consists of two women on their ukuleles singing hilarious songs on a variety of topics. Juliet Moody and Catherine Crowley’s songs covered such things as bears, the near-extinction of redheads and society’s fear of women breastfeeding their children in public. The humour ranged from gross-out to clever satire, and always managed to be entertaining.
The women quickly drew the audience into their act, and didn’t let them go for the whole show. They were charming as they worked the crowd, pretending to be spontaneous with their song choices and performances. Some of their songs intelligently poked fun at the double standards in our society, such as the aforementioned “Ruin Your Day with Tits”, while other songs relied on more puerile (in a good way) humour. Like a love song called “DooBeeDoo”, which compared their relationship to increasingly disgusting and ridiculous things: that song managed to be gross, funny and weirdly romantic all at once. Their final song was called “Naughty Nuts”, and in the performance I saw they chose someone for the audience participation that was so into it I briefly considered the possibility he was a plant. Not all songs were funny, though. One called “The Bear” was rather melancholy, but they quickly brought the humour back without losing momentum. None of this would work if the ladies couldn’t sing, but thankfully they had lovely voices.
I was thoroughly entertained by this performance. It was funny, sweet and a little bit thought provoking. I would definitely recommend it.
