Red Baraat [USA]
Eight piece band with Punjabi rhythms infused with infectious brassy anthems – but don’t worry it just works. This Brooklyn, New York crew know how to get the crowd moving and heat things up just as the evening started to get cool. This ensemble is a little bit more ‘Can I get a hey ho‘ instead of ‘Jai ho‘.
The band showed off their mastery of the musical genres that have influenced their eclectic sound, trading fours and improvising as in the Jazz music and using Classical Hindustani bol (Northern Indian spoken mnemonics) as an introduction to the song.
They mixed Bollywood dance tracks, Punjabi ryhthms and their new york attitude, and brought the first night of WOMADelaide to its climax.
These guys were much bigger party starters than any of the bands that played after them, and frankly after them eveything else seemed much more mellow in comparison.
Electric Suzaphone? What’s not to love?!?
And what about their own rendition of pirate death metal?
Don’t argue just head bang you know you want to!
