Review – Katerina Vrana: Feta with the Queen
Bar Adam Hills, this is the funniest comic I’ve seen this Fringe.
Katerina Vrana is a Greek comedian and actor who lives in the UK, and this is from where she derives most of her observational humour. Her show is a delightful mix of Greek and British humour, which provides a weird but hilarious combination through which Katerina expresses her subtle but deep-seated desire to place herself on the British throne.
Many comics shy away from racial stereotypes for fear of offending, or being accused of racial intolerance, but Katerina is laugh-out-loud funny as she describes and plays out Greek stereotypes to the audience. She is especially funny when she contrasts them against the reserved nature of the stiff-upper-lip British, or when she quirkily imitates the confusion of Americans at encountering a Greek-British woman.
This multicultural affair will appeal to any person who, like me, has found themself an immigrant in a foreign country. The jokes are enjoyable and delivered with a comic precision that will prove a thought-provoking commentary on being Greek while living in the UK.
