Review – Cirque de Gymnastique: RED
Cirque de Gymnastique present RED, a high voltage display of performance gymnastics. The show is performed by around a hundred gymnasts of varying ages, from multiple gymnastic troupes in SA, to illustrate a range of emotions including love, hate, jealousy and passion.
Accompanied by some brilliant musical choices and a little bit of not-so-great “Gangam Style” and Ricky Martin, the performers were given a good venue and a captive audience with which to display their great skill and technique. All the performances were well choreographed and well executed, which is pretty impressive given the very young age of some of the performers. The performance included displays of ribbon, floor tumbling, mat work, tissue and bar – to name a few. On many occasions the audience gasped aloud, initiated by watching a flawless backbend or multiple backflips. There were some minor continuity flaws and performer mistakes, but the performance was nevertheless extremely pleasurable to watch. The overall effect was mystical, creative and technically brilliant.
With so much skill, it’s hard to pick a highlight, but a theatrical tribute to Lady Gaga, performed with death defying stunts on a trampoline, was one that Ms Germanotta herself would have appreciated.
Cirque de Gymnastique: Red is a family friendly show dedicated to amazing audiences, with high level gymnastic skill, and it is definitely a pleasing show to watch.
