Review – An American’s Guide to Being Like Totally British
Through her stand-up Alexis Wieroniey compares and contrasts English and American culture from the perspective of a US expatriate who’s lived in Britain the past nine years. Along the way she explores plenty of tangents ranging from political banter to fake French guys and the impending zombie apocalypse. It’s all delivered in the high-brow manner that such auspicious subjects demand – that is to say, dick jokes pervade throughout – and Wieroniey has the guts of a true comedian, even when the laughs are sparse.
I had a good time. Although plenty of material falls flat, and Wieroniey does occasionally explain the joke a little too much, her rapid-fire presentation and natural confidence lend more than enough momentum to keep the awkward cricket noise from ever making an appearance. The spontaneous conversations with audience members definitely proved to be the best bits, and on the whole it’s a funny enough way to spend an hour in a pub that I’d say it’s quite worth the fifteen bucks. After all, it’s nice to have a few laughs.
