Review – Greg Fleet: The Games Master
Greg Fleet is a staple of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and for good reason. While commonly appearing in film and television, his live material takes on a different, more considered tone. He cuts a thick figure, pacing up and down the makeshift stage in the beautiful council chambers of the Melbourne Town Hall. It’s an oddball combination that suits Fleet’s act.
Fleet is not your standard Aussie stand up. His humour is somewhat left of centre, taking cues from long form improvisational styles. He builds winding, sincere tales that pull the audience to the edge of their seats only to break that tension with absurd punch lines that can cause snorting. Don’t go expecting a comedic reflection on the life of a married, middle class, middle-aged man; Fleet’s life has taken far more adventurous turns, or so he wants you to believe.
Fleet is an actor as well as a comedian, and has genuine talent in both fields. This allows him to imbue his set with movement beyond the regular physicality of stand up. Not only does he have excellent comic timing, but excellent expression, the combination of which makes for an enthralling show. Fleet is performing every night until April 20th.
Ironically, this will sound like a heckle but… a review usually has a star rating so people know whether it’s worth it to see or not.
Not always, it depends on the publication and sometimes just the individual reviewer.
We prefer to discuss the show, instead of rating it, to focus on the content instead of an overall, and highly subjective, score.
Thanks for the comment.
Having seen Fleety live before, I am sure the rating would be the maximum no. of stars!
