Review – The Law Revue
Venue: The Forum Theatre – Downstairs

I’m not sure what I expected from a show put on by a bunch of lawyers and legal professionals, especially a crew that’s named after a textbook torts case. Perhaps I expected something really political, or a lot of in jokes about top tier firms vs mid tier firms- just something that generally resembled the “Look Mum, I’m A Lawyer…” tumblr.
What I definitely wasn’t expecting was the all singing, all dancing cast of this year’s Law Revue, the BottledSnail team. These amazingly talented eight (and their crew) were so engagingly funny, you couldn’t’ even say “don’t quit your day job” – although I think we’re safe on that front.
The Law Revue was a non-stop series of weird, bizarre, challenging (and sometimes sexy) sketches which expanded on beautifully simple concepts and took them to the extreme. Ever had someone help you out in the kitchen whilst you had butter on your hands? Watch what these guys do with that.
Nobody is safe from BottledSnail’s keen observational comedy eye; without giving too much away, everything from the Liberal leadership, to hipsters, to Disney movies, to overprotective nonnas get a look in. It’s really unique stuff; whilst some comics stand out in their style or their take on a particular subject, BottledSnail are truly creative.
Live sketch comedy can be really difficult to produce, especially with a limited budget. It takes a lot to plan out simple sets and versatile costumes, and to make the audience believe without special effects. Their commitment and dedication to portraying vibrant characters was evident, especially in one sketch about, ahem, European style greetings.
BottledSnail didn’t miss a single beat throughout the show, and had the (sold-out) audience laughing the whole time. It was the kind of fast-paced action where you keep laughing even when you’re not sure what’s going on anymore. They created an amazing atmosphere in what can be an interesting venue for comics.
