Review – Celia Pacquola – Let Me Know How It All Works Out
Season: 13/2 – 22/2 @ S7, Garden of Unearthly Delights
Price: $30 | Buy Tickets
Existentialism and indeterminacy form an odd backdrop for a comedy show, and yet Celia Pacquola’s packed sorta-tent rarely goes long without a laugh during the comic’s 55 minute set. Frank revelations about travel, love, and destiny are somehow finely intertwined with anecdotes about hoarding, porn stars, and 80s movies. Like Avatar or Inception, Pacquola’s show will make more sense while you’re there than it does afterwards; unlike Avatar or Inception, you’ll leave with a newfound appreciation for the storage of healing crystals in one’s bra.
Even while discussing awkward and uncomfortable situations, Pacquola’s stage presence is remarkably relaxed, and lends a conversational air to the room – halfway through the show, while the comic was questioning the life choices she made to bring her to this show, a little old lady in the front row cried out ‘We’re glad you did!’. It was a heckle, sure, but it was also a sign that everyone felt in on the moment.
So far in my lifetime, I’ve only ever snorted with laughter at a total of two Fringe shows. Two years ago, it was Celia Pacquola at the Rhino Room, and last night, it was Celia Pacquola in the Garden of Unearthly Delights. Coincidence, or fate? Either way, you should probably see this gig. You might get hit by a bus tomorrow.
