Tres Miserables saw die-hard fans and musical novices trekking to Gluttony to see yet another version of the popular musical, that traces the story of redemption of the ex-convict Jean Valjean (not to be confused with Gene Valjene). Supported unwaveringly by the fresh-faced accompanist Ned, the trio embark on a condensed 60-minute version of the 160-minute musical/film or 1,488 page paperback novel.
Firstly; These guys can sing! It is absolutely refreshing to see young musicians being able to truly show off their capabilities and vocal strengths without relying purely on electronic amplification. Bravo, encore! Joeffrey/Jaffa/Javert’s vocals and stage presence stood out in the tight trio.
Secondly; It is obvious that the cast knows their source material thoroughly (take that factory worker 1). They are able to move the story along and highlight key plot points that are often brushed over in the musical adaptation whilst also taking the time to shed light on the historical context of the time in which Les Mis is actually set – all these revolutions are so easily confused sometimes.
Some of the humour was a little beyond the pale – I’m a little over the priest jokes personally. But this version was energised with modern parallels, riddled with French language, double entendres and quick costumes changes that left audiences laughing at both the high-brow and low-brow comedy alike.
A Joyous (if irreverent) homage to Les Miserables.
