Ghost Crime Tours are a year round event run by the company of the same name. Throughout the Adelaide Fringe, extra evenings have been added to their schedule in order to offer more punters the chance to find out about the grisly murders which have taken place in our little city, and the local ghosts we have in residence.
The tour began at the Rundle Mall entrance of Adelaide Arcade. I quickly realized that my friend and I were the only participants on this evening, but initial feelings of awkwardness soon diminished as we were introduced to our lovely tour guide, Nicola.
We quickly went through housekeeping and OH&S and we were given an overview of what to expect from the evening. For the next just-shy-of 3 hours, we would be walking through the city and hearing stories of gruesome murders, tragic deaths and unexplained paranormal events which have taken place.
Nicola began her introduction with a brief history of Adelaide and its settlement, and already within minutes I had learned new things about the city I’ve lived in since birth. We were told the unfortunate statistic about Adelaide having more serial killers per capita than any other city in Australia.
We started the tour and followed our guide through the city streets, stopping regularly to hear stories of buildings said to be haunted by ghosts, and of the disturbing way these people had met their end.
We were taken as far as the end of Hindley Street, meeting some interesting (mortal) characters along the way and finished up in the tunnels below the Treasury Hotel at approximately 9pm.
Although I am not myself a believer in the paranormal realm, I found the history aspect of the evening extremely interesting. I learned many things I never knew about Adelaide and the stories of murders dating back over 100 years were fascinating.
Great news is; if you catch the bug for the supernatural of the city, in the other tours the company offer, you can meet the ghosts of Port Adelaide and country Kapunda as well.
Ghost Crime Tours are an out of the ordinary and entertaining way to spend an evening, intriguing to both Adelaide locals and to those from afar.
