Review – Winter is Coming
Season: 3rd to 15th March @ Campanile, Garden of Unearthly Delights
Price: $28 | Buy Tickets
Opening with a booming a capella rendition of that theme song we all know and love, Winter is Coming is a comedy show for lovers of Game of Thrones (i.e. everyone, right?).
Backwards Anorak take the stage and introduce themselves. They’re an amateur musical theatre group who they believe are destined to be the next stars of the blockbuster series. What better way to get the attention of HBO and George R. R. Martin himself, than to perform their own rendition of the show, with a twist or two of course.
The casting call sees the main parts divided between the two lead actors, Vince and Michelle, and their understudies. The all powerful Khaleesi being the most coveted role. The audience are the ensemble cast, occasionally called on to participate in one of the Game of Thrones musical numbers, or to provide additional sound effects such as an ‘incest noise’.
Throughout the hour there are many costume changes and hilarious disagreements between cast members fighting over the authenticity of the characters they are depicting. The show ensures to cover all the important aspects of Game of Thrones such as dragons, incest, ‘The Red Wedding’ and of course, Westeros’ entry into this year’s Eurovision competition.
Winter Is Coming is hysterically funny and the comedic timing of the banter between the performers is exceptionally well done. This show is creative, naughty and one not to be missed by anyone who is a fan of Game of Thrones.
