GRUNGE fans, its time to get your cabaret on. As for everyone else, nevermind.
Justin Burford’s Kurt is a show by Nirvana fans for Nirvana fans, a celebration of Kurt Cobain rather than an exploration of him. Justin absolutely nails Kurt Cobain’s hoarse crooning, and the backing band are just as convincing.
What you’ve got here is effectively a highly proficient cover band performing a range of Kurt’s famous and more obscure songs, intercut with brief monologues that provide a little context. From the hyperactive lighting to the steel frame of the stage, everything about the show has the feel of a rock concert – except, that is, the audience, who are dressed to the nines and comfortably seated at round tables (because, of course, this is a cabaret show and we must do cabaret things). Nirvana without a moshpit doesn’t feel quite right, but the roar of the audience goes some way to correcting this.
Justin not only nails the singing, his dazed monologues are reasonably done too, although the script does leave you wanting more of an insight into the true Kurt, rather than the very safe portrayal served up here.
