PARIS Wells is the most well known, unknown musician in Australia.
She commands a rather mixed-bag of fans. Old(er) women, gay stylish guys, young girls and the odd straight men who are comfortable with her strong sense of style and enjoy her music for the fun and exciting experience that it is.
And yet, she’s not as well known as some of her counterparts (Kate Miller-Hiedke, Washington, etc).
Her new show, Projected, like many cabaret shows, is an autobiographical journey through her relationships, dreams and experiences. She manages to squeeze in most of her popular tracks amongst a mix of new music and “old” forgotten ones.
A small projection depicts her life in music-video-esque style and generally complements the show quite well. What bothered this reviewer and his guest, is that the projector was placed at the front of the stage, pointing to the back of the stage and Paris, her band and various sound equipment were all in the way of the projection. While this could’ve been cool if the projections were planned with such intrusions, but they clearly weren’t. A show of such calibre deserves better technical assistance.
This is a cabaret show though and can’t really be judged on it’s technical woes. The music was pumping, the crowd was enjoying it – some a bit too much (a woman in the audience couldn’t stop shouting compliments at Paris) and our highlight of the show was Paris’ cover of Kanye West’s Love Lockdown.
So whether you’re into her music or not, this show is worth the ticket price just to check out some funky beats. Pity it’s a cabaret show, it’d have been great to bring your dancing shoes to.
