Review – Movie 43

Movie 43 is very progressive; a cocktail of high and low-brow comedy, raunchy, in very poor taste and overloaded with offensive material; it made me laugh out loud a lot!
It sets a classy tone to begin with but there are heaps of poop jokes. The closest thing to an American Monty Python’s Meaning of Life that I’ve seen. Loved Freddie Got Fingered? You’ll enjoy Movie 43.
Various segments are directed by comedy luminaries including Griffin Dunne and Peter Farrelly and it hosts a cast of actors mostly known for less comic films like Uma Thurman, Dennis Quaid, and Kate Winslet.
Breaking away from what we’ve become accustomed to in recent times, it precariously blends classy satire with really over-the-top comedy. I enjoyed its surrealist humour and completely absurd situations.
The film starts with a satire of ‘The Player’ called ‘The Pitch,’ Charlie Wessler (Dennis Quaid) sits in the Hollywood studio office of producer Griffin Schraeder (Greg Kinnear) pitches his idea for a film. After some sneaky satire the comedy style shifts to a prolonged sight gag that’s destined to become a classic scene.
I wouldn’t want to spoil the movie for anyone so I’m not giving anything away. My favourite segments were: ‘Beezel’ involving the antics of a jealous animated cat featuring Elizabeth Banks and Josh Duhamel; ‘Truth or Dare’ featuring Halle Berry and Stephen Merchant; ‘The Catch’ with Kate Winslet and Hugh Jackman, and I give special mention to Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber in ‘Homeschooled’.
Be warned, don’t bring your grandparents to this movie (unless they’re totally wasted).
