Review – Georgie Carroll: Nurse Case Scenario
Georgie Carroll wants us to know that, when it matters, nurses are very caring and serious professionals. The other ninety percent of the time, though, they giggle and they giggle a lot.
“But I’m the only one I know of who’s been sent home early for pissing myself laughing.”
Carroll is performing the Fringe for two weeks, at a mid-sized venue, and has completely sold out all her shows. This surprised me, at first: Georgie Carroll isn’t a name in the world of comedy, and many recognisable comics don’t sell-out at the Fringe. After seeing her show, though, her popularity became obvious. Firstly, she has a lot of appeal with South Australia’s large (and networked) nursing community. There were plenty of career nurses in the audience who were happy to find validation of their profession on-stage, as much as any of us do. But secondly, and far more importantly, Carroll is really very funny. Her stage-presence is effortless, and she has that rare ability to deliver a sharp, pointed anecdote.
Carroll is a nurse because she cares, she tell us, but also because she’s a voyeur. And it’s this, her knack for the intrusive, that makes her an excellent comic. A recommend for anyone, nurse or otherwise.
