Review – Harley Breen: Some Kind of Something

I’ll admit to something of a bias in that my favorite type of standup comic is a storyteller. So, a performer like Harley Breen is exactly the kind of show I enjoy attending and it’s great to see an Aussie comedian on his way to competing on the bigger international stages.
The easiest way I can describe Breen’s work is that he reminds me a lot of a younger Billy Connolly, at the point where he discarded the music completely and just told stories. They weren’t always gold, they weren’t always laugh out loud funny the whole way through, but you could see his eye for humor and good sense of comic timing.
Another thing that is great to see in an Australian comedian is a good sense of when to tone down the ‘Australiana’ factor in his material, and when to appeal directly to the shared cultural background we have as a nation. He is identifiably an Australian bloke without playing up the ‘character bit’ to communicate that.
I highly recommend that you get down to the Portland Hotel to see Harley Breen as soon as you can. He is performing every night except Mondays until the 21st of April, so there’s no real excuse not to, right?
