There’s something of a fine art to using rude humor. When you’re talking about sex in particular, you need to be comfortable with it, otherwise your audience won’t be. I don’t know what it was about Wrongtown’s show ‘Population You!’, but I just didn’t feel like the duo were comfortable with the material, but had decided it was what would get them the laughs.
To be completely honest, I arrived a little late to the Tuxedo Cat and missed the first 5-10min of the show, but I don’t usually have a problem connecting with performances when I miss the beginnings. This time, I did. The whole thing just seemed… pointless. The show advertises itself as a sketch show, but the flamboyant costumes tie everything together, even with a variety of wigs changing throughout, so when everything is completely disjointed, and occasionally without a discernible punch line, you start looking for a plot thread that would justify what’s going on.
I will gladly tell you that the two women of Wrongtown are very talented singers and certainly revel in the spotlight, but they were definitely not comfortable with the material and suffered a little from the forced bland American accent that affects musical theatre people, and they can’t carry a show on their own. As part of a larger troupe, these two would probably thrive, but in this show, it’s really not that enjoyable.
Wrongtown are performing every day but Wednesdays until April 9th.
