Review – Pat Burtscher’s: Breaking Even

Burtscher is a funny guy. He reminds me of Louis CK, albeit what I imagine Louis CK sounded like before he really found his voice and refined his set. ‘Breaking Even‘ is a show about being broke, being lonely, and trying to muddle through this life that no-one’s really ever prepared for. Pat’s grasp of how to push the line of funny and bad taste is really strong and he pushes that line constantly throughout his set, taking something ‘everyday’ as far as he can toward being inappropriate, but holding back just enough that the audience isn’t uncomfortable about it.
The only thing I can say against him as a performer is that there’s little rhythm to the show he put on. There were frequent breaks as he decided on the next set of jokes to use, which is distracting as an audience member, but to his credit the jokes he has are excellent and worth waiting for, even as you wish he’d tighten his presentation up a little more.
This is one of the few shows I will actively encourage you to check out while it’s on, or maybe when he’s next in the country, because he’s on his way up in the comedy world and you even get a hug on the way out.
Burtscher’s performing every night except Wednesdays until the 21st of April.
