What would happen if Lano and Woodley moved into a share house with the Young Ones, and then the world ended? Apartmentocalypse! is what would happen.
Three unsuspecting lads wake up one morning to find that the milk is about to go out of date, their rent is so in arrears that they’re about to be evicted, and Armageddon is nigh. Details of the disaster are limited – the streets are empty and some people are known to be ‘contaminated’. The particulars of the end of civilisation are, however, of minor importance to the plot, which explores how each of the housemates deal with the crisis, and with each other throughout the ordeal.
One calls on his cadets experience, and begins issuing orders and rationing supplies. Another takes a more zen approach and insists that the key to survival will be revealed through meditation. The third, who has been working four jobs to drag himself out of debt following a messy shotgun wedding and subsequent divorce, takes the prospect to abandon past mistakes and goes feral at the first opportunity.
The show is cleverly written, and the narrative flows enjoyably. At times some of the jokes felt a bit staid, and a touch more subtlety would go down well. Similarly, there were times when the plot or the characters leaned a little too heavily on stereotypes, but overall it was great fun. A real gem.
