10 Quick Qs – Gordon Southern
Gordon Southern is swinging in from London with his latest show. We made him answer all the pressing questions.
1. Describe your show Twitter-style, 140 character or less!
Adrenaline monkey takes fast paced whiz through nearly 20 years of comedy in his 10th solo show
2. Do you feel pressured to be funny at family gatherings?
Weddings, yes. Funerals, less so after the incident with Auntie Lisa and the ventriloquist.
3. Is this your first Adelaide Fringe? If so, what are you most looking forward to? If not, what is your least favourite thing about the festival?
I’ve been to Adelaide Fringe on and off for ten years. I love almost everything about it although having the Clipsal 500 on at the same time as the Festival, Fringe and Womadelaide is ridiculous.
4. What was the most challenging aspect about preparing your show?
Finding the small gigs in London where I can try bits out, and then knitting it all into an hour and not knowing if the seams will hold!
5. If you could be any character in any movie, who and what would it be?
Han Solo in Star Wars was the first character I saw and wanted to be. Oh, and Snoopy. Is Snoopy a movie?
6. Who’s your biggest comedic idol?
There’s many, for different things: Billy Connolly was huge in my childhood listening to vinyl LP’s, Al Murray and Harry Hill were very influential when I started. My current favourite colleagues would include Andrew Maxwell and Glenn Wool. Glenn is coming to Adelaide this Fringe and I urge you to seek him out!
7. Is heckling allowed?
Of course. Join in, make the show unique. Don’t be a dick about it, mind.
8. What’s your favourite Internet-related guilty indulgence?
All of it. Especially Scrabble Online with pals all over the world, so day or night there is a move on.
9. What is the biggest accolade you’ve received from one of your shows?
Nominated for best show at Perth Fringe last week. Also got nominations in NZ and Edinburgh in 2012. In short, nom nom nom.
10. What other Fringe show are you most excited to catch up with?
The Epicene Butcher was delightful in Perth, as were Mickey D and Titty Bar Ha Ha. Frehd the Clown is the best kids show around and Limbo will smash records in the Gardens. The Rhino Room will – as usual – be the home of quality comedy. Oh, and I’m at the Rhino room again this year!
Gordon Southern promises to be your new favourite comedian from 13th February.
