Review – Saturday Night Soirée
La Boheme is the perfect place for this intimate little burlesque show. The dark and sultry atmosphere of the venue creates the perfect atmosphere to indulge in some light-hearted entertainment and escape the trappings of the real world for a while. Mixing cabaret and burlesque, the show is designed to display the substantial talents of its four performers: the impressive vocals of enigmatic singer Sidonie Henbest; the dance, singing and puppetry from Ninian Donald; upbeat piano and vocals from Matthew Carey; and oodles of cheeky sex appeal from burlesque dancer Sapphire Snow.
The clear standout was Ms. Snow, who maintained an infectious level of sassy humour while displaying a nifty skill for burlesque tease and interacting extremely well with the crowd. But the entire troupe were able to keep the audience engaged the whole time – sometimes even a little too much. Their songs pulled at the heartstrings and incited the audience to sing along, which the performers seemed to tolerate but annoyed some members of the audience. So your experience with this show might be dependent on the energy of the audience on the particular night you go.
Saturday Night Soirée is perfect for those who want to be entertained by talented performers in an ambient setting: the talent displayed in the show is palpable and the energy maintained by the performers is great. But please note, the show and the venue are best enjoyed with a cocktail in hand and some friends to laugh along with.
