Review – Alex Wasiel: Status Update
Hailing from Sydney, Alex Wasiel gave up her beloved career as a corporate lawyer to pursue a high-flying career in comedy. Appearing in the beer garden of the just-over-from-Gluttony venue, The Producer’s Bar, she happily makes herself the centre of attention with her delightful brand of silliness. Through her dancing, impression-work and a flawless imitation of house music, she delivers a set of stand-up that would be the highlight at any late-night comedy venue.
Unfortunately the timeslot she’s landed is so early that the sun is still up for it, and her comedy wasn’t able to find much traction with the small audience at such a sober hour. There were chuckles aplenty, but none of those fits of hysteria you can find yourself having amongst a crowded and energetic audience. If you can’t catch this show towards party end of the week (I caught it on a Tuesday night) then look for Wasiel’s guest appearance on variety shows: I’m confident she’d kill in front of a lively audience.
Alex Wasiel (she informs us Wasiel is pronounced to sound like “unreal”) has brought a solid hour of laughs to Adelaide with Status Update. It’s not the best example of a Fringe act – there’s little thematic cohesion to it apart from, “Shit that’s happened to me since I last toured” – but you still get a comic who’s not afraid to go full method in service of a joke. And that’s the sort of commitment to weirdness we can recommend.
