Review – Women in Docs
I never thought there was a difference between country and folk, but apparently there is, and Chanel Lucas and Roz Pappalardo work in both genres with Women in Docs. And all you need to remember is they’re from North Queensland, and nothing bad ever comes out of Queensland. They’re touring the country promoting their new album Carousel and what better place to have their Adelaide leg of their tour than in the Garden of Unearthly Delights – where different types of carousels abound.
It was an intimate gathering of about forty in the Speigeltent, but as the duo took to the stage with their extra talents Silas Palmer (keys/violin) and Geoff Green (drums), they began singing immediately and carried the crowd with them. Both Chanel and Roz have voices that could work in both country music as well as fit in perfectly in a rock concert, and especially Roz with her wild arms and rock voice. Singing along is expected at their shows, and how could you not want to when they sing about give-way signs or single’s night at the supermarket. (Yes, they’ve written songs about these things.)
Even if you’re not a fan of country or folk music, you may be momentarily converted by these two. They have a unique sound and some interesting and funny stories to tell and sing about. If you can get to any of their shows this year, it will be worth the cash you spend. Otherwise plan to be there next year when they do it again all over Australia.
