Review – Jeff Green: All Guns Blazing
Last year, Jeff Green was in a regular sized venue that just kept selling out, so this year, they’ve moved him to the great Forum Theatre. Unfortunately on opening night only about a fifth of the theatre was full, but this guy took it in his stride and performed to the audience who had made it out to see this veteran comic do his thing. His new show, ‘All Guns Blazing’, is a mix of personal anecdotes and stories from his life these days – Jeff is a family man, so it’s all about his wife and sons – interspersed with some more serious lessons and wake up calls on the state of Australia today.
I’m not 100% sure what the title refers to; perhaps it was the rapid fire gags or the way he didn’t hold back at all (nothing better than when a comedian gets stuck in to the people who are late – makes you want to never be late for anything ever again). Either way, there was never a dull moment as he took the audience through a series of unexpected and slightly left of centre gags. My favourite thing was how he didn’t hesitate to voice what he thought the audience must be thinking of each bit; it’s the same calling people out on their shit that has made him such a popular presence on Australian TV and radio.
Jeff Green does comedy for smart people, so if you’re looking for a series of stoner jokes, puns, or the type of sexual jokes best described as ‘bro comedy’, then this probably isn’t the show for you. However, if you like your comedy just a little on the strange side, then you’ll have a good time – and if you’re into Wu Tang Clan and cats, well, you’ll have a great time.
Conclusion: you should probably go and see this show.
All Guns Blazing runs until the 7th of April, with one more show on the 14th, at 8.15pm (7.15pm on Sundays) at the Forum Theatre.
