Review – Simon Taylor: Funny
Simon Taylor’s show Funny opened at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival last night and I’m happy to report that the title is not, in fact, bullshit. This guy is seriously funny in his ~1hr show, which focuses on anecdotes varying from the sublime to the ridiculous. His performance style is really well balanced – no monologues, no weird physical gags, and just the right kind of audience engagement.
One thing I’ve noticed about comedians who aren’t super famous is that some of them try too hard to be controversial, or to have a ‘thing’. What I liked about Simon’s show is that I was kept laughing out loud, but there were zero jokes that made the audience go “oooooh, I don’t know, can you say that?…” He proves that you don’t have to get weird with jokes about rape and death and babies and racism, just to have an audience full of people sitting forwards in their seats waiting for more. It was a refreshing change.
In short, this is a great value show in a sweet venue, and you can feel confident taking just about anyone along. You could even bring your grandparents. Just don’t let them drink the lemonade.
Simon Taylor’s ‘Funny’ is on until the 20th of April.
