Review – The Tim Vine Chat Show
Knock, knock. Who’s there? Classic comedy. Classic comedy who? Tim Vine. While this joke is not inherently funny, it’s unconventional simplicity is a taste of what you will experience in the Tim Vine Chat Show. With his blatant one-liners that either make you laugh out loud or cringe, the charismatic Mr Vine holds his own for the hour long, rapid-fire, boarded-line attack of jokes that you’ll miss if you aren’t tuned in.
His brand of self-satisfied quirkiness would be a bit much to deal with over the hour, if the chat show element was absent. Upon taking your seat, you’ll notice a sheet of paper asking if you would like to be a part of the show. If you’re feeling brave, you can fill in your full name, occupation and something ridiculous that has happened to you. I couldn’t help but be impressed with the unplanned banter with random audience members, which consisted of a Physiotherapist, Operations Manager, Radio Broadcaster, IT Project Manager, and a difficult Transport Supervisor.
His attention to the moment in the interview was divided, as his mind was ticking away, looking for the next one liner that could be manifested in the immediacy of each occasion. Although, his ability to play to the crowd was impressive and he managed to pull comedy from a clean, inoffensive place that kept the audience involved and not attacked.
A good, wholesome night that is safe for the whole family and guaranteed to get all the dads feeling right at home with the puns, one-liners, witty rebuttals and stating-the-obvious humour stylings.
The Tim Vine Chat Show is on every night of the Festival except Mondays, 7pm (6pm Sundays).
