How refreshing is it when you go to see a show that utilises elements of comedy that doesn’t attack the audience? Well, Headliners 2 almost gets there, with a range of stand up artists that make you feel like you’re there with them in their stories, listening to an old friend recall a funny incident and feel awkward and empathetic at the same time.
With a rotating schedule of comedians throughout the festival, Headliners promises to deliver a plethora of comedic styles that cover such topics as politics, family, living in New York and airports. If you’re lucky enough to catch Dave Merheje (CAN) or Wil Sylvince (USA) you’ll be rolling on the floor laughing out loud. Dave’s charismatic, excitable rant-style approach is reminiscent of catching up with an old friend that loves to complain, allowing you to simultaneously empathise with him and be aggressively entertained at the same time. While Wil’s slightly softer approach, in comparison to Mr Merheje, holds your attention and delivers a fresh, physical comedy routine, peppered with his signature catch phrase.
The compilation of comedians works as well as your second favourite album. There will be parts that you love and parts that you wish you could skip, but over all, you’ll want to listen to it again for those few genius tracks towards the end.
